Ghost Controls Access Control Installation in New York City, NY

Ghost Controls Access Control Installation: The New York City Owner’s Guide

Ghost Controls access control installation in New York City typically runs $340-$780 for a complete keypad, remote receiver, or wireless entry system, and most jobs are completed same-day when you call before noon. We stock Ghost Controls-compatible transmitters, keypads, and control boards on our trucks across the five boroughs, so there’s no waiting on a part to ship from Texas. Most homeowners realize something’s wrong when their gate stops responding to remotes, the keypad goes dark after a rain, or visitors are stuck pressing a button that no longer buzzes the house.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls builds its access hardware around three main lines: the TSS (Titan) series for heavy-duty swing gates, the DTP (DeerPro) series for lighter residential duty, and the standalone AXWK and AXDP wireless keypad kits. The critical compatibility gotcha is the frequency pairing. Pre-2019 Ghost Controls receivers operate on 433 MHz; post-2019 models shifted to 915 MHz to reduce interference from New York’s dense RF environment. A new keypad or remote that doesn’t match your receiver’s frequency will pair but won’t open the gate, and we’ve seen this confuse even experienced DIYers in Queens and Staten Island.

To identify what you have, check the FCC ID on the receiver label inside the control box, usually mounted on the gate post. The model number starts with GC- followed by the series code. For keypads, measure the mounting hole pattern. The AXWK uses a standard 2.75-inch square pattern; the older KPX-100 uses a wider 3.5-inch pattern that won’t transfer without drilling new holes in your masonry or post.

We carry both OEM Ghost Controls keypads and remotes and quality aftermarket equivalents from Linear and DoorKing that we can program to work with your existing Ghost Controls receiver. The aftermarket route saves roughly $60-$90 on parts and carries the same 90-Day Done Right Promise on our labor. If your control board itself has failed, we stock the GC-1 and GC-2 series replacement boards, though these we source OEM only. Ghost Controls firmware is proprietary, and third-party boards don’t reliably handle the soft-start and obstruction-sensing logic that keeps a heavy Queens driveway gate from slamming.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Access Control Is Failing

  • Remote works only from inside the car, not from the street. This usually means the receiver antenna has corroded at the connection point or the receiver’s output power has degraded. Salt air from the harbor accelerates this in coastal Brooklyn and Staten Island neighborhoods. The antenna itself is a $12 part, but diagnosing whether it’s the antenna or the receiver board takes a meter and some patience.
  • Keypad lights up but doesn’t trigger the gate. Nine times out of ten, the keypad’s output relay has failed after moisture intrusion. The AXWK keypad is rated IP44, which sounds adequate until you see what a driving January nor’easter does to a post-mounted keypad in the Rockaways. Water wicks in through the bottom seam, freezes, and cracks the solder joints on the relay.
  • Intermittent operation that gets worse after rain. This points to a failing low-voltage transformer or corroded wire nuts in the junction box. Ghost Controls transformers are sealed, but the wire nuts supplied in the original kit are standard residential grade. We replace them with waterproof silicone-filled nuts on every job we touch.
  • Gate opens but doesn’t close, or reverses for no reason. If this happens only when using the access control but not the manual button, the receiver is likely sending a sustained signal instead of a momentary contact. This confuses the Ghost Controls logic board into thinking an obstruction is present. Receivers don’t age gracefully in New York’s humidity cycles.
  • Complete deadness: no lights, no clicks, no response. Check the breaker first, but if power is present at the transformer and nothing downstream lives, the control board took a surge. Con Edison’s grid in older parts of the Bronx and Brooklyn is notorious for brief spikes that fry sensitive logic boards. A whole-house surge protector helps, but once the board is gone, it’s gone.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Parts Range Labor Total Installed
Keypad replacement (AXWK or equivalent) $140-$220 $180-$260 $320-$480
Remote receiver + reprogramming $95-$180 $180-$260 $275-$440
Control board (GC-1/GC-2 series) $180-$340 $220-$320 $400-$660
Complete access control system (new keypad, receiver, 2 remotes) $280-$420 $260-$360 $540-$780

What drives the range: masonry mounting in a stone or brick pillar costs more than wood post mounting; fishing wire through an existing conduit in a tight Manhattan courtyard takes longer than surface-mounting on a freestanding post; and programming multiple remotes for a multi-family brownstone adds time but not parts cost. We settle the full price before we turn a bolt. No surprises on the bill.

Every access control installation is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise, the Keystone Standard. If the keypad doesn’t read reliably in February, or a remote loses pairing, we come back and make it right. No paperwork to file, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check the breaker, verify the transformer LED is lit, and confirm the keypad’s getting 24 volts at the wire terminals with a basic multimeter. If you find 24 volts present but the device is dark, you’ve isolated the problem to the device itself.

Where DIY goes wrong: programming a new Ghost Controls keypad or remote requires entering the receiver’s learn mode, which means opening the control box and pressing a small button on the receiver board while the gate is powered. The control box houses 120-volt incoming power and the motor capacitor, which holds a charge even when unplugged. If your hand slips, or you bridge the wrong terminals, the damage is expensive and the shock hazard is real. We’ve replaced enough fried boards after DIY attempts in Bay Ridge and Forest Hills to say this plainly: the programming step is where a $200 job becomes a $600 job.

We carry Ghost Controls-compatible keypads, receivers, and control boards on every truck. Most access control swaps in New York City take 90 minutes to two hours from arrival to tested and working. Call (877) 326-7055 and we’ll give you a straight answer on whether it’s worth a service call or if there’s something safe you can check first.
