FAAC operators attach to gates through fabricated mounting plates, hinge assemblies, and custom brackets that vary by operator series and gate type. The 400 series swing gate operators, 740 and 741 sliding gate motors, and the 422 hydraulic units each use different arm geometries and mounting footprints. A bracket that fits a 415 LS will not bolt to a 770 without modification, and we’ve seen owners waste money ordering the wrong plate because they matched the gate size instead of the operator model.

Check the silver FAAC data label on the operator housing for the model number and production date. For fabrication work, we also need the gate material - steel tube, aluminum, wrought iron, or a mixed estate gate - and the leaf dimensions, because FAAC’s torque ratings assume a properly hung gate within spec. An overweight or misaligned gate burns out operators and cracks welds.

• The gate sags or drags at the latch end. This usually means the hinge weld has cracked or the pin has ovalized in its bushing. The FAAC operator keeps trying to pull or push a leaf that no longer swings true, which overworks the motor and eventually trips the internal limit switches.
• You hear grinding or metal-on-metal scraping when the gate moves. The fabrication that keeps the gate leaf aligned with the operator arm has shifted. Often it’s a cracked mounting plate or a bolt that has wallowed out its hole through years of vibration on a busy Brooklyn or Manhattan driveway.
• The operator runs but the gate barely moves, or moves in jerks. The mechanical linkage between the FAAC arm and the gate leaf is failing. • Visible cracks in paint or rust streaks at welds or brackets. These are early warnings. Once moisture gets past the paint at a weld, New York City’s humidity and road salt accelerate corrosion. We’ve replaced brackets in the Rockaways that looked fine from the front and were paper-thin behind.
• The gate has been hit or backed into. Even a low-speed impact bends arms, cracks mounting plates, or throws hinge alignment off. The FAAC operator may still test fine on the bench, but the fabricated hardware that connects it to the gate is compromised.

There’s a short list of things a careful owner can check safely. Make sure the gate moves freely by hand with the operator disconnected - if it binds, the problem is mechanical, not electrical. Look for obvious cracks or loose bolts. Check that the FAAC operator’s manual release works.
